Columbia Records - archives?

Somewhat glancing relevance to genealogy, but I wonder, does anyone have
a contact email for anyone to do with old recordings to do with the
Columbia record company?

I'd like to see if it's at all possible to obtain - and I'd be willing
to pay a reasonable amount [though their idea and mine of what's
reasonable might differ (-:!] - sound file copies of records they made
in the 1920s?

The recordings would have been made 1923 or later, in Cleveland, Ohio,
USA, of Viktor Lisjak (or Lisjakov)'s Moderni Cigani (Modern Gypsies
Orchestra), especially if they feature "Marie" Haley (piano) or William
Haley (violin).

Mary Haley was my grandma, William was her brother; they emigrated from
Bedlington, Northumberland, England, in 1923, to Philadelphia then Ohio.
I do have some recordings, but they were made in the 1970s from what was
by then a very worn 78, by people not really skilled in such a transfer.
(Reading the history of Columbia, it was possibly an acoustic recording
anyway.) The recordings would IMO not be good enough to have any
commercial value.

once described by Eccentrica Golumbits as the best bang since the big one ...

I can't find Lisjak/ov in the BL or LoC catalogues but the Lisjakov
Kvartet comes up in the http://adp.library.ucsb.edu/ catalogue :-

There are also entries for the Victor Lisjak Orchestra listing
recordings published by Victor.
www.dlib.si has hits for "Victor Lisjak Orkester" and "Moderni cigani"
leading to some newspaper images and OCR texts.

Wow, thanks for that! I know the Cleveland recordings had singers, as my
great-uncle's memoirs mention them having to find a couple - but I guess
it's possible they made instrumental ones too. I know they made some for
"another recording company" (infuriatingly he doesn't name it!) in
Chicago, so those might have been them.

Yes, I did manage to find some .si hits by Googling, but unfortunately
though I have a reasonable ability with languages, whatever those are in
(Slovenian?) is beyond me! (And were "too big" for Google translate.)

Here's a long shot. I passed this URL to a pal of mine who is an opera
fan. He eventually found what he was looking for. It is not just opera
so you may be lucky and find what you want. I have never used the site
so I cannot help you any further.

Thanks for that! No luck looking for Lisjak(ov)'s lot, but a page worth
bookmarking. ("Historical Recordings from the Library of Congress".)

You might check out Sound Beat:

http://soundbeat.org/

It comes from the Belfer Audio Archive at Syracuse University in the
United States, and they seem to have all manner of oddball recordings.

Thanks! No hits on Lisjak or Lisjakov, but as you say, an interesting
collection.

No hits in the British Library Sound Archive. The main library has a
music score "Breezes of Spring" by V. Lisjak dated c1925 which may be
relevant.

_Could_ be; apparently (I suspect like most bandleaders of that time) he
did compose a bit.
