Hi,

I'm searching for the birth date of Annie Ellen Watson, daughter of
William Watson and Betsy (possibly Elizabeth Deboo). William Watson was
involved in railway construction and because of that job first sent to
Denmark where he worked in the surrounding of Odessa. There (within
Denmark I mean) also his son William H. Watson was born around 1864.
Then later on William Watson shifted his work area to somewhere in
Russia and in 1866 his daughter Annie Ellen was born there. Russia is a
bit vast so I'm firstly looking for possible places where in that period
railways were constructed and then hopefully with the involvement of a
British company. The data given are taken from English Census in 1881
and 1891, where they do not specify which part of a country if foreign
born and the marriage certificate of Annie Ellen Watson with Stanley
Augustine Starling. I do hope this is the correct group for posing this
question and would be much obliged by any answer. Its a question in
researching my English uncles ancestry.

Isn't Odessa in Russia, specifically in what is now the Ukraine? The Odessa I visited was on the western (European) side of the mouth of the Dneper river which debouches into the Black Sea.
Yes, I think this is an appropriate group for submitting such a question.
My grandpa worked for the imperial Russian telegraphy service on a railroad constructed from Tikhoresk near the Black Sea to Derbent near the Caspian Sea. Perhaps unravelling the history of the building of that line (or lines) might shed some light for you.
A series of rail lines extend N-S from the Caucasus to the Baltic Sea. These were used for troop & material transport during the Russian Civil War and probably during WWI wihich preceded it. A history of the construction of these lines might be of help as well.

Nope, I do have a copy of a deed from Odessa (Denmark) with the
signature of William Watson. Its certainly in Dännish (I can read that
partly due to similarities with Dutch and German).

As always there are several places listening to the same name, but in
this case I am as sure as I can be based on English Census (giving
Denmark as birthplace) and the document mentioned before.

Thanks, its the most "western" group I could find, though the posts I
saw (last month) were a bit more eastern of where my main point of
interest is.

Those are indeed very welcome ideas, I'm regretfully left with one
more handicap ....... can't read Cyrillic. In that I am fully dependent
on translations and hope they have some English / German / French /
Dutch? versions on their history.

Thanks and regards,

Sigh ..... as always I mix eastern and western ........ should be the
other way around. Have no sense for left and right, and have to look
where my watch is to distinguish.

Reread that part and I did make a mistake. It was Odense in Denmark.
Excuses.

Tried to get on, but there seem to be loads of railway constructions
ongoing in Russia in that period. Also no specific mentioning of English
partners (though foreign partners are mentioned on occasion, but without
specification as to origin). There are certainly partners from England
as some state "with English aid" in some phrasing. But those references
are more general in their statements. Nasty search! Hope still for the
incidental reference.

Greets,
Richard
