I am looking for help reading the 1910 Hamburg Passenger List page for
Anton OLSTA. He is about 3/4 down the left hand page that I have posted
at http://tinyurl.com/38ervj. What I cannot make out is the name of the
town in the Residence column. Ancestry.com has it indexed as
"Kolkilnitza". If this is the person I think it is, he was from Russian
Poland and I cannot find a town that comes close.

Any help would be appreciated...

Having trouble using the Jewish Gen ShtetlSeeker today at
http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp

But Multimap at http://www.multimap.com/ has two possibilities, looking for
Kolkilnitza in Ukraine..

1 Kolokolnitsi, Leningradskaya, Russian Federation
2 Kolokol'nitsa, Vladimirskaya, Russian Federation

You might check these out.

Good luck.

Thanks, Joe.

I was having trouble with ShtetlSeeker also this morning. But after I
posted I tried a *contains* search using "nitza" in Poland ... thinking
that the ending was the most readable part of the location's name.
ShtetlSeeker suggested only "Rekownitza, Rekownica, Grosswalde", which
is similar to what I have from other sources (Rakimicka, Rekotnicsa,
Rekitnica, etc.). So maybe the 1st letter on the Hamburg Passenger List
is an 'R'. You think? But I am not sure Rekownica was in Russian Poland
in 1910. The map I am looking at makes it look like Rekownica was in
West Prussia? I am not sure how fluid the borders were at that time.

I am having other computer problems, so could not keep your site on my
screen. Will try it again, and see if the first letter does look like an
"R'.

The Ellis Island site has Olsta indexed as follows.
Anton Olsta Rakimicka 1910 25

Will try to look the manifest over a little more. Got to go watch "The
Company" on TV right now.

Yes. I've seen that. If this is the same Anton it looks like he went
from Hamburg thru Liverpool to New York.

On the Ellis Island manifest, can you make out the name of the person he
is going to visit in Cleveland? My first guess was Aniela Kosinska. More
difficult handwriting...

Enjoy the show!
